This is a good Indian restaurant. It is not the best or most amazing Indian food, but it is the best in Des Moines. The simply you should eat here. For those new to Indian cuisine don't worry there are great descriptions in the menu! The service is really slow and the food takes a while to come out. They are in no hurry so sit back and chill a bit and don't come here if you are trying to get out fast. Consider this your warning incase you didn't catch that here it is in all caps THEY ARE NOT IN A HURRY SO DONT COME HERE IF YOU ARE! This is a great place for a date because you can sit back chat and get to know each other without taking up space in a servers section costing them money. See you just learned something when you break out a tent and camp in a servers section you are literally costing then income (so stop doing it)! I like the mango shake and Malai kofta. The best way to try Indian food is just order it and try it. Figure out what you like by trail and error. Stop being board and life and try something new.

The food is ok, not super flavorful or authentic, but it isn't bad either. I'm not a huge fan of their naan, but I did enjoy their tandoori chicken - it stayed very moist and was not dry at all. They had a chickpea dish that was very tasty as well, I'm not a huge fan of their spinach paneer, I thought it could have used more flavor

I love all Indian food but India Star has some room for improvement. Why, you ask? It started with the mint chutney which was more like spicy salsa verde - we could barely taste the mint. I always look forward to pairing my chutney with the naan, papadam and in this visit's case, the veggie samosas (note: they have a great appetizer sampler for only $3.99 - perfect for two to share). In an effort to sample as much of the menu as we could, we ordered the palak paneer (homemade cheese in spinach paired with basmati rice), Chicken Tika Masala (red, masala-based, creamy sauce - think of it as the spaghetti of Indian food - great for those who are new to the cuisine), followed by Lamb in a lentil and potato sauce. All were fairly delicious, but I couldn't take my eyes off the masala sauce which was an odd orange-ish color rather than the typical creamy bright red - something tasted slightly off - wish I could put my finger on it. Mango fans: go for the mango shake - it's only $2.99 here! In the end, I would return to India Star but wouldn't run home singing its praises.

Start the music, I'm ready to do my best Bollywood dance after this meal! The food here is just delightful! Yesterday I ate a samosa for pre dinner, I had Alu Gobbi for dinner (not as saucy as I have had other places, but beautiful big pieces of fresh cauliflower and potatoes). I also ordered a side of ROTTI bread with no butter which makes it vegan! I love how the menu it says what items are vegan so it was easy for me to order! The restaurant is pretty spacious and our group of 4 with a baby, got in right away on a Friday night at 6pm. The service was good, not over the moon as they never asked us if we wanted anything to drink but water, but that's ok.. It saved me a few bucks on brews! This was my first stop here in a few years and It's only because of location, it's a little far from down town! But I must say it's worth the trip! I'm going to have to come back and check out the lunch buffet at some point!

Best Indian in Des Moines. Buffet lunch for $7.99 is consistently good, service is friendly and helpful, and the place is always clean. We've tried all the others and always come back to India Star. Updated for March 2013: Still the best.

I love India star! Great and inviting staff! Superb nan and mint chutney! I love the dry spice at the table. I've had the lunch buffet and it's a wonderful eclectic mix of Indian delicacies! I haven't been there for dinner but I definitely want to try it! My favorite buffet item is by far the cauliflower potatoes. It's different every time I dine (for lunch) but that's partially what I like about it, I get to try something new each time! They have beers for purchase but I'm not sure if there's a full bar? India star is great!

This is my favorite Indian restaurant in DSM. It's fast, fresh, and tasty. I personally am not really a fan of Indian buffet style so I typically go in the evening or order for take out. I really enjoy the fact that they make it so clear on their menu what is vegan just in case there was any questions. Their roti (if ordered without butter) is vegan also. The okra might be my favorite thing on the menu here and they do a really nice job of when you order spicy vs mild. My husband is a big fan of their lamb and orders it probably every visit. The location is a pretty decent size and they have a large parking lot. Also, to note - they do serve roti during their buffet and will bring it out to you if you have dairy allergies or prefer roti. Very great service. Oh! and AMAZING samosas! So tasty! great sauces too!

Walked in for the lunch buffet and was told I could seat myself. I was asked if I wanted anything to drink. That was the end of service--no refills and dirty plates were not cleaned from the table. The food is flavorful, but not spicy. The buffet itself is on the small side--two meat dishes and four vegetarian dishes. Naan is on the buffet, which seems to be a common trend in Des Moines. When I ate at buffets in Iowa City and in Denver, many restaurants did "small batch" naan and would bring a freshly-cooked basket to the table. I have yet to have a similar experience in the Des Moines metro. There's also fruit (it was grapes today), a dessert, and salad. No appetizers on the buffet. I'm half tempted to move back to Denver just so I can enjoy decent Indian food again.

I was looking to take my mother somewhere for an Indian buffet and found this place. I read reviews before coming here and thought it looked pretty good. The food here is great! I have had Indian buffets in other states, but this one is the best one I have ever been to. Their food selection is limited (Like the other ones I've been to), but the quality is high. You will definitely find a dish you like here. Their chicken is extremely tender and juicy! The sauces were flavorful and gives a great kick for the food. Their staff is friendly and they were not busy during the lunch hour I was here. Parking was easy here because they have their own lot. Would definitely come back and introduce this place to other people!

The lunch buffet is not as large as others I have been to (in other cities), but it is by no means small. I love the food here in general, and it makes up for the average atmosphere. I love the vegetarian options on the buffet - an impressive amount - and dinner service is great too. I usually go between here and Namaste. There is some overlap between the two, but both are delicious in their own ways to me!

I like this place for dinner. Food tastes great and service is good. Tried Shahi Paneer, Saag and Baingan bharta. All are equally good. Won't recommend this place for lunch buffet since, they don't have much options in food.

This review is long overdue. India Star is by far my favorite restaurant in Des Moines. My husband and I come here at least once every two weeks and we have never been disappointed. The food is always fresh and the staff are friendly and quick to refill your drinks and rice! My husband gets something new every visit and has not found something he dislikes yet. I always order the Navratan Korma and it is to die for! Start with some mixed pakora and garlic naan, you won't regret it.

Just ate at indian star. I went to nameste but it was closed. This indian star place was by far the worst indian place ive ever been to. I went to the buffet and the selection was three dishes... Hardly any selection. The food was just so moderate I would have been better off not going. Very disappointing. Find another indian place to go to. Ive had indian all over the country.. This was the worst. :(

This place is not the best Indian you will have in your lifetime, but it is enjoyable. In Des Moines, I don't really expect to take my palate on an adventure through the regions of India. Unlike other posters, I did not experience a long wait. In fact, the appetizers came out promptly and the main course came out about 10 mins after we were done with the appetizers. Service was therefore efficient. Our waters were promptly refilled and the waiter made sure we were doing fine. All in all a decent restaurant. Would come back again. On a side note, they do have a pretty good lunch buffet that is great value.

  • Adam K.

The food is wonderful, but expect a long wait for initial order placement and for your food. We waited for 30 minutes to place our order, despite telling them twice that we were ready to order. Our food took an additional 50 minutes to arrive after placing our order. This was an unfortunate situation with a hungry 16-month old.

I am a punjabi guy. Visited this restaurant to see the price, Quality and service of food. I eat vegetarian food. We ordered Dal Makhni and Kadahi paneer, tandoori Roti. The restaurant is beautiful. Parking is good. The order took around 35 minutes. Service was good. Food was worth and tasty. Portions were comparable. I will definitely recommend this place to anybody and will visit again.

I am writing this review based on my two visits to this restaurant. Cost wise, it is moderate and ambience is also okay. But most of the dishes here are very bland with poor taste. Not to mention the service which is really bad. Make sure to hold the plate while eating. Otherwise, they will clear it while you are still eating.

It's a shame to have to give this place a 1-star rating, since we were expecting quite a bit. We came in on a Friday evening, and it wasn't busy at all. A few tables were occupied, but not too bad. The reviews had stated that the wait time is a bit long, but I did not expect for it to take a full hour to receive our food! Our waiter never checked on us either. We got our appetizer probably 20 minutes into the wait. Once an hour hit, we asked how much longer, and we were answered with 5 minutes. About 7 minutes later they finally brought out the food for three of us, but took another 7 minutes to bring out the fourth dish. By the time the food got there, we were all irritated with every aspect of this business. The waiter still didn't check on us to ensure the food was okay, which wasn't the greatest, especially to wait that long for. He only apologized once the food came out for it taking so long, but not very sincerely. When paying for our order, he divided up the check and didn't bother to offer a credit or anything. My S.O. whom loves everything India, was beyond disappointed with the service as well. Based upon this visit, I wouldn't ever recommend this place to anyone.

This place a little gem. The outside doesn't look like much, but inside it has beautiful, eye-catching decor and is clean and spacious. I got the lunch buffet, and for $7.99 you get an all-you-can-eat Indian meal. The Salad Lettuce was a browned on the edges - should've put out newer. :( The Raita was delicious and tangy - yum! (Love how they misspelled the name of the dish on the buffet card - RIATA, haha). The Chicken Curry was SO MOIST and the sauce was warm and rich and awesome. Little pieces of cilantro in the sauce was subtle, but welcome flavor. The Naan Bread was kinda crusty - not sure how fresh or if it sat out too long, but could've been softer. The Tandoori Chicken was okay - not spectacular. The Saag Paneer was wonderful - a comforting spinach sauce with chunks of Indian cheese in it. The garbanzo beans were in a nicely-spiced sauce and were great! The Basmati Rice with Peas was fluffy and good. Overall, I found it to be an enjoyable lunch with home-cooked food - a fun meal with lots of different flavors, textures and temperatures. Perhaps they were a bit timid with the seasonings, but I didn't mind this - they certainly appeal to more palates that way. Our service was fine - my water was refilled and plates taken away promptly, etc. My brother wasn't offered a refill on his Coke, so perhaps they don't have free refills for pop? For the price of a value menu at many fast food places nowadays, this is so much better. I recommend you give it a try! :)

Considering there are not many Indian restaurants in Des Moines, India Star is my fave. I love to go for lunch - you can get in and out really fast and it is always tasty! Grab the naan while you can as that goes the fastest at the lunch buffet. Love the Pakora and the Navratan Korma but are rarely served at lunch so we are forced to go for dinner some ;-) I do wish the atmosphere was a bit cozier - makes me feel like I am in a fast food joint.

I have probably eaten at 50 or more Indian buffets in the Midwest in my lifetime, including the Devon Ave. (Little India/Pakistan) area of Chicago. Believe me when I say that this is the worst Indian buffet I have ever encountered. The items were as cliche as they come - Chicken Curry (an Americanized bastardization of true Indian curries), burned Tandoori Chicken, overcooked homogenized Baingan Bartha (stewed eggplant), etc. Coming in about 15 min. before the buffet closed, all the items were barely lukewarm, or had not been replentished. Even the fresh naan had an irritating yeasty flavor to it. And they started taking items away from the buffet even as people were still finishing their meals. The strangest part is that all of the dishes were actually under-seasoned without enough salt, when proper seasoning is usually the pride of any Indian establishment. Finally, the whole thing set me back 8.95 - an insulting price for a school cafeteria steam table experience like this. Please go to Namaste India on University Ave. instead. Their South Indian lunch buffet is infinitely better and cheaper than this; in fact, it is one of the best buffets I have tried anywhere.

A friend and I had showed up here at 4pm, only to find out they opened for dinner at 5. We decided to wait, drove around for an hour, came back very hungry and excited for some good Indian food. It took a while for them to come to us once we were ready for dinner. We ordered, got some cheese curd pakoras as appetizers, which aren't very traditional for a pakora, but they were DELICIOUS with their tamarind and cilantro/jalapeno sauces. It took them more than 40 minutes to get our food out, and for two hungry travelers... that was so close to being unacceptable. In the meantime, our water was full, but the actual servers clearly avoided our table and were not very friendly to us. For a simple dish, 40 minutes seemed a little extreme. We finally got the waiter to respond to us, and he said the was on its way, which it really was... within one minute, the food showed up at our table. The food was great... rice perfectly cooked, lamb vindaloo so good that I was sad that it was gone, even though I was full, when I reached the bottom of the metal dish. But the service was such a deterrent that we've decided we wouldn't be going there again, unless we took the food to go. BOTTOM LINE: Don't come hungry, and don't expect big smiles or good service. Take the food to go, or try a different place.

The lamb korma is absolutely delicious- spicy, sweet, and creamy. I'm not too keen on their chicken vindaloo though, it's more like a gravy and it didn't have as much spice as I would have liked, and it was actually more potato than chicken. Also, their portion sizes are just a tad smaller than they should be for the price of each entree ($9-13ish), especially since many people eat Indian food family style, to share, including the portion of basmatti rice they give the table. Garlic nan was good, and service was fine. The food is pretty good overall, but the lunch buffet is probably a better value for what you get.

The food is really good, but not everyone is a fan. My son loves trying new food, but wasn't happy with his choice. Which is why I took advice from Yelp and had the Karachi lamb and was very pleased. My wife who is extremely picky with food would give it 2-3 stars as they do take a long time to bring the food (45 minutes) out, but thought it was good. Oh and it is more like $$$ not $$

I came here for a few times.. Lunch buffet.. Dinner... Lunch buffet is not really worth it.. but for the price you paid.. it's really cheap and it's not that bad... For me.. I go for the quality of the food.. I will prefer to come here for dinner instead of lunch... I have tried lots of dishes here... Love Spicy food.. I always have the cook to make my food really spicy but at the same time do not burn my lips.. :P (you know what I mean if you love spicy food.. :) I love how their food is spicy but they still have the taste of it. unlike some other restaurants.. you can't taste anything beside spicy... I heard lots of good thing about the lamb here.. Personally.. I do not love lamb but I love the lamb in India Star... I will definitely recommend you to try it!! :) The mango Lasi is nice but I think it's a too sweet for me... but I still like it.. There is not much I can write about service... It's just normal...

Have eaten here before and it's been ok. The buffet is actually good. I think the chicken curry is kind of bland though. Ordered somosas and chicken curry last night and had a stomach ache and felt ill immediately after eating here. It is 7:21 am this morning and this stuff is still sitting in my stomach like a rock. The only reason i ate here in the first place was because Kurry Express was closed. Regretting that choice this morning. It was 7:30 and my friend and i were the only ones in there. Should have taken that sign and ran!

A nice find. We stopped at the India star when visiting the Iowa state fair. Excellent food and a great find for a vegetarian in Iowa. It was recommended by the owner of the Rodeway inn, also a good place in Des Moines.

The food at this place is a 5 for sure, but I have to give it a 4 overall because the space sucks. I suppose it's better than the old beaverdale space, but it is still lame. Last time I was there they had no heat and all the diners were wearing their winter coats. lameo. Also, it just looks dirty and dated. Their food is magical and stupendous. I wish the chef would open up a new place (in the western burbs). He would concentrate on the back of the house and someone super cool would run the front of the house. That would be cool. the chicken makany and paneer is super good. Go there and order those things. Don't forget the naan and raita!!!

  • Nathan B.

Yikes, how does this place have four stars? Look, Des Moines suffers for its lack of decent Indian food, but that's no reason to go soft on reviewing a place like this. The food is simply passable, edible. It's not terrible, but it's not good. (And the icing on the proverbial cake is the atrocious so-annoyed-by-customers service.) So if you're in Des Moines and in the mood for Indian, I would recommend traveling to another town (Iowa City? Omaha?) or--if you're crunched for time--maybe hit up Namaste on University. But unless you're in some sort of Indian food emergency situation, avoid India Star.

I hate to spoil the love fest of reviews that are on the site. But I couldn't be more unhappy with my visit to India Star. First I will say that I know that Indian food is normally a bit on the spicy (hot) side. But my compliant runs deeper then that. To make a long story short: The service was very bad. We spent almost an hour waiting for our meal. I know it was about an hour because after the 30 minute mark we started pulling out our cell phones to play games and check email. I know, very rude thing to do in a restaurant, but I know I needed something to distract me from the long wait. Next: what I ordered and what I received didn't really match up. I've had Indian food in several different restaurants. You can have the meal spicy (hot) or toned down a bit. I was asked several times if I wanted mild or spicy. And several times I said MILD. What I received had me going through water like a horse and brought on an epic runny nose. We only saw our waiter three times during the entire meal. Once to take the order, once to bring the food, and once to bring the check. If i wanted a refill on my drink (which I did), I would have had to get it myself. The long wait was not worth it. Having food that you can't enjoy or that punishes you later is not worth it. Inattentive waiters are not worth it. If i have to wait for a trip back to Chicago before doing Indian dining again, then so be it. But I won't be dining here again. Oh, and they could really use a filter on their tap water. I used to live a few blocks away from this restaurant when I first moved to Des Moines. I couldn't stand the water straight from the tap then, I can't stand the taste of it now.

Food was fresh but lightly seasoned compared to Indian food in other parts of the country, but I realize we are in the heart of midwest here. My co-worker and I stopped for lunch buffet. Adequate but service was non-existant. I guess they assumed that we just wanted water and would take care of everything else ourselves. Price was right, under $8 for lunch buffet.

This is my favorite Indian place in Des Moines - not saying much, you say? Well, I would also say it compares very well to my favorite Indian places in London, where Indian takeaway is a staple of every twentysomething's diet! I have played it safe so far - chicken tikka masala and chicken korma - both are very nice, with flavorful sauces and tender white chicken. I think they tone down the spices for our Midwestern tastes, I ordered the "medium" and couldn't tell the difference from the "mild". I haven't eaten in - we've gotten takeaway every time we've eaten there - so I can't vouch for the service, but they are usually quite prompt with the food. Everything tastes fresh! Their naan bread is not the best I've ever had, but still quite good - I recommend the garlic naan, tasty! Overall, I nice surprise in the heart of Iowa. Even my husband likes it!

Great for Takeout. The place is questionably clean, so I avoid the lunch buffet and eating in, but definitely a good go to for week night takeout. I suggest the Maharaja dinner, a good intro to lots of the dishes they serve and perfect to split between two or three people. Super Staff. All the staff are quite nice and are sure to get you seated and checked out quite fast. If you take amateur Indian food eaters, they are sure to suggest dishes they would enjoy. Slow Food. Things don't come out of the kitchen quick, which is why I prefer take-out. Call ahead and pick it up in 30 or so minutes.

This is probably my favorite Indian restaurant in town. It was certainly the busiest I've ever seen an Indian restaurant in Des Moines, which could be good or bad depending on how you look at it. The service was professional, although slow. The food was great! I like the sauces for my Indian food more creamy than oily. If you're the same way, then this is the place for you. The prices were comparable to similar restaurants: $10 gets you an entre.

This is the worst Indian food I have tasted ever it was oily and bland my four year old could make better food than them the chicken Korma was not normal yellowish color it was green literally looked like pea soup with chicken pieces and the chicken was very dry the tandoori chicken was dry and unappetizing and the naan was cold and greasy our waiter was very rude he didn't refill our drinks horrible service all around I will never come to this place again when I want to have real good Indian food I will go to namaste I DIDN'T WANT TO GIVE THEM ANY STARS BUT YELP MAKES YOU DO AT LEAST ONE OTHERWISE THIS IS A NO STAR ESTABLISHMENT

Traveling on business, my buddy and I were looking for places to eat and came across India Star. Both loving Indian, we thought we'd give it a shot. I was pleasantly surprised to find savory Chicken Saagwala. Best I've ever had? No. But it was tasty and will leave you satisfied, I think.

The India Star is a place I frequent often. Each and every time I visit I have exceptional service and great tasting food. The chai is excellent and the best in town (compared to other Indian restaurants). The lunch menu always has a great variety of options that include vegan options. The Navrttan Korma is excellent! I have not found a better place that serves Navrttan Korma. Sometimes I order the garlic naan just to take home and eat! :) Definitely a place to go to absorb the Indian music, drink some chai and eat delicious Indian food.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in town. The service is always great and depending upon the night, you may even get a visit from the owner. I usually get a chicken dish and an order of naan and it's always wonderful.

Moved to around the 5600 block of Douglas. That is about a mile from the original location. Same good food, same friendly people, same reasonable prices. One of my favorite Indian restaurants. Never had Indian? Try the lunch buffet. It is usually almost all vegitarian with some chicken dishes. For lamb, you need to order from the menu. Pork and beef are not typically served at Indian places.

  • Lynne B.

Never had a bad meal. Our daughter from San Francisco always goes here. She feels it is better than what she had in SF. Don't expect fast food. Everything here takes time, the bread is baked in a special oven. Plan a leisurely meal and enjoy the company. We never have had the buffet, always going at night. the mulligatawny soup is great. The staff is reserved but not unkind. The shrimp marsala and chicken vindaloo are our usual fare but my husband will eat many of the other entrees. Ask for spicy if you think the regular will be to mild.
